Are Teeth More Than Chompers?

Animal teeth come in a variety of shapes and sizes. And they are used for more than just eating!

Naked mole rats use their four razor-sharp teeth to dig their tunnel homes. Their lips seal shut behind their teeth, so they don’t worry about dirt getting in their mouths. Poisonous snakes push venom through their fangs when they bite to poison prey. Vampire bats’ fangs pierce holes in prey’s fur and skin. The bats then lap up the blood with their tongues. Hippos give enormous yawns and show giant teeth to threaten anything that might disturb them. Baboons display a mouth full of huge, pointed teeth to scare away predators. The next time you brush your teeth, take a good look at those pearly whites. Be glad you don’t have to use them for digging dirt or latching onto your wriggling dinner!…
