The Juggle IS REAL

Emma Bovill aka ‘Word Bird’ is a freelance writer, editor and communications consultant specialising in the arts and lifestyle. She lives in Cheltenham and helps to run a contemporary art gallery, ArtÓ, in Stow-on-the-Wold. She set up her content creation business, SaltBaked, in 2022.

Juggling the juggle is a phrase I use constantly, and the juggle is real. As a single mum of primary school-aged kids, being a freelancer is both my biggest challenge and my greatest gift. The enormous upside is that I have choices – who I work with and how, when I work and where (most days in an art gallery). There’s a huge value to that flexibility – both for myself and by extension my children – that doesn’t show up in my tax return. I’m only two years (and a one-offproject that catalysed the potential of freelancing in the first place) into being self-employed and I’m still learning how to manage my clients, my workload, my time and my finances (thank you, Integro Accounting!).
