Yes, funny business. Joe Fearn is a circus performer and business owner based in Kings Heath, Birmingham. He’s worked in circus since he was 18 and his skills have allowed him to travel the world. He now runs a circus entertainment group and a circus skills company, teaching new talent. Mel Barfield found out what it’s like to get paid to play.

So Joe, what exactly do you do? I am creative director and founder of House of Mash, which provides circus entertainers for events, and of Circus Mash, where we teach circus skills to people of all ages. How did you get into it? I always loved the arts and did gymnastics, dance and drama at school. I originally planned to try and become an air traffic controller but found the jump from GCSE maths to A Level huge. At 18 I looked at all my options and chose a Cultural Exchange Programme. I ended up in America for around five years, doing tours and teaching school kids how to perform circus skills.
