The man on the landing In 1959, when I was four, my family moved from Preston, Lancashire, a few miles south to Leyland. Our new home was a three-bedroom terrace house a couple of hundred yards from the West Coast mainline railway. Coming in through the front door, there was a hallway with the downstairs front room and back room off from this, and a staircase leading to a landing. If you carried on straight, you had the toilet on the right and then my sister’s room at the back of the house, with a window facing the backyard, and a sloping roof over the coal shed.
