THE LONGEST STALK In 1964, 15-year-old Kenneth Furnival, from Runcorn in Cheshire, had his bus ticket checked by conductor John Ray, then aged 18. This encounter triggered a lifelong obsession in Furnival, who came to believe that Ray was really the 1950s pop star Johnnie Ray, whom he slightly resembled. It started with Furnival tracking down Ray’s home address and sending him notes on multicoloured paper, calling him “Johnnie Ray”, complimenting him on his “blonde hair and blue eyes”, and asking for signed pictures of him dressed in a blue pullover. Ray never responded in any way, but this did not deter Furnival.
