TONY ‘DOC’ SHIELS The artist-magician Tony ‘Doc’ Shiels has died at the age of 84. A regular in the pages of Fortean Times, especially in the early days, he was a true original, his life and work brewed from a heady mix of daring showmanship, Gothic surrealism, Celtic storytelling, blues piano, art, laughter and Guinness. He was born Anthony Nicol Shiels in 1938. Brought up in Blackpool, he adopted the title ‘Doc’ in 1970 while working in Cornwall as a stage magician. Here he spent several years performing elaborate – and at times gory – magic shows with trusted friends and family. The stage name became an alter-ego with which he had a somewhat love-hate relationship. Friends tended to call him Tony, but to the public, and particularly to readers…
