The large sarsen stones (the famous lintel-topped uprights) are local, Wiltshire, the smaller bluestones, broadly speaking, are from Preseli, in the part of the British Isles that came to be known as Wales, and while it was always recognised that the 6-tonne (6,000kg) Altar Stone was a different rock, it was simply assumed it came from another Welsh source.
