Beyond Black Shuck A monstrous black hound with eyes like the very fires of hell themselves, whose awful gaze freezes the parishioners to the spot – else strikes them dead – as it bursts from the church to the mist-veiled marshes beyond… The giant hell-hound Black Shuck is something of a folkloric celebrity in coastal East Anglia, featuring in countless books and articles, including numerous appearances in Fortean Times.1 No location is more closely connected with Black Shuck than the Suffolk village of Blythburgh and, in particular, its church.
