DAVID CLARKE talks to the RAF personnel who witnessed the Little Rissington Incident

On 21 October 1952 Michael Swiney was training a Royal Navy student, Lt David Crofts, in a Gloster Meteor VII jet from the RAF’s Central Flying School at RAF Little Rissington. They punched through a layer of cloud as they climbed into the sky from the airfield in Gloucestershire. But what should have been a run-of-the-mill exercise quickly turned into one of the most dramatic experiences in Swiney’s career. “Smack in front of the cockpit were three circular objects,” he told me in 2002. “Two of them were on an even keel and one of them was canted at a slight angle.
