In March 2011 on the day of my birthday I decided to take a long-overdue trip to Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, a place made famous by the discovery of a Dark Ages ship burial in 1939. Looking back on my visit – of which I was reminded by announcements in March 2024 from the TV and online show Time Team of plans for more excavations at the site – it is with a sense of mild reproach I indict myself for not ever visiting sooner. The fact I hadn’t – despite then being a Suffolk resident with long-standing interests in archæology and ghosts – was partly down to prejudices absorbed in my formative years.
