If, like this columnist, you assumed the whole site of Pompeii had been fully archæologically explored, you would be mistaken – it seems there is still a third of the area to be excavated and studied. The one ‘virtue’ of the ash, though, is that it preserved everything it smothered. One of the most recent finds is a 49ft (15m) long by 20ft (6m) wide banquet hall, uncovered towards the end of 2023.
