To coincide with the new research project into alien abduction claims discussed by Nigel Watson on the previous page, I thought it appropriate to summarise the diverse range of potential explanations for what may be going on during these extraordinary events. So here are six theories that have been considered over the past 60 years. One of them may even be true! An interesting first thought is that while there were a few rare outliers, abductions were not clearly present from the onset of the UFO mystery immediately after World War II. A decade or more passed before the abduction phenomenon came to be recognised and studied as a distinct aspect of ufology.
