UNUSUAL WAYS OF SHUFFLING OFF THIS MORTAL COIL

Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, 48, was resting on a roadside bench in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on her way to a nearby temple when the ground opened beneath her and both Gali and the bench she was sitting on were engulfed by an eight-metre (26ft) deep sinkhole, disappearing from view in a swirl of water. Emergency services were immediately called and began an intensive eight-day search involving 110 rescuers, including scuba divers, sewer workers and firefighters, using sniffer dogs, robotic cameras and ground penetrating radar. However, they could find no trace of Gali, apart from her slippers, which were discovered on the first day of the operation, before having to abandon their search on safety grounds.
