After so many years it is an incredibly hard genre to do something fresh with, and with Anticucho, Gustaffo Vargas has absolutely, 100 per cent, succeeded. Rather than just lifting cyberpunk from its usual pan-US/Japanese setting and adding a touch of Peruvian flavouring, the Lima setting is integral to these stories: they could only take place in Peru, and bring together the country’s street culture, architecture, mythology and natural history – for example, in the form of gallinazos, the black vultures common in Lima and repurposed here as cyborg drones. The stories themselves are heartfelt, based around the friendships of the Pirañas and their struggles…
