If ever a such a thing as a meta-analysis is performed of the literature of ‘true ghost’ experiences between 1880-1970 I am sure a preponderance of accounts will be revealed across the Christmas season, from mid-December through into the first week of January. There is a plethora of examples of which the following are just a taste. In mid-December 1880 a 12-year-old girl, Louise Robinson, lay dangerously ill at her family home in Trent Road, Brixton, London, suffering from typhoid fever. She recalled some 12 years later, for the Society for Psychical Research, “The pain in my head was terrible, like an iron weight.” But also troubling Louise and increasing her anguish were pangs of worry concerning her favourite Aunt Mary, whom she knew had fallen very ill at the…
