NUSANTARA SPIRIT WAR Indonesia is in the process of relocating its capital to the province of Kalimantan on Borneo island, creating the new city of Nusantara. The move, though, is being hampered by fears of santet, a traditional Indonesian practice involving spells, charms, and the invocation of supernatural forces to harm others from afar, believed to be used extensively in Kalimantan. Aware of this problem in 2022, before the city’s construction began, President Joko Widodo led a ritual called Kendi Nusantara, or “A Jug of Nusantara”, to appease the local spirits. This involved regional leaders blending soil and water samples from their home regions in a large clay pot to seek permission for the construction from resident spirits.
