Phantom Vehicles I sleep at the front of the house in a quiet residential road in Dorchester. One morning a year or so ago, while lying in bed, I heard a large creaky vehicle approaching, that sounded like an ancient farm lorry. It rattled to a halt right outside, the engine was switched off and brake applied. No one emerged, no one approached, no voices – just total silence. After a while I arose and peered out, but saw only the few private cars already parked. There was nobody about. The following morning the same thing happened, though this time it sounded like a normal van.
