SAGA OR TRUE STORY? The Sverris Saga was written by Karl Jónsson, an Icelandic abbot of the Thingeyrar monastery, who lived in Norway where he witnessed the rise and rule of King Sverre Sigurðarson. It is assumed the saga was completed immediately after Sverre’s death in 1202, as historical sources from soon after that year already refer to it. The Sverris Saga is a detailed account of the King’s life and reign. Sverre ascended the Norwegian throne in the late 12th century, a period marked by fierce power struggles, especially between Sverre’s own army and a rival faction known as the Baglers who were supported by the Roman Catholic Church.
