BBC archivists use AI voice recognition to find “holy grail” of paranormal television

Members of the “Haunted Generation”, growing up in the 1970s surrounded by proto-folk horror and truly menacing public service announcements, still reserve a special place in their hearts for a 1976 report by Luke Casey about the fabled Hexham Heads, shown on the BBC’s teatime Nationwide programme. Broadcast only once, the Nationwide report tells the story of the 1971 discovery of two 6cm (2.4in) tall, crudely carved, stone heads found in the garden of a council house in Hexham, Northumberland, by brothers Colin and Leslie Robson, then aged nine and 11, and the subsequent strange encounters with a werewolf-like entity.
