Slips in time have been used as plot devices in fiction for many years. I still recall reading Tom’s Secret Garden as a child, with its protagonist slipping into aVictorian garden at night. And who can forget the hilarious film version of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, based on the 1889 book by Mark Twain, complete with Bing Crosby musical numbers? More recently, the 1990s sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart has gained a cult following, with its adventures of a television repairman who finds a portal in time back to the 1940s. Each of these involves a person apparently travelling back in time to a past era, either spontaneously or through some sort of portal. But surely all this is fiction?
