WHALE TALES A sperm whale in Lake Zurich? On 19 August, a dead 50ft (15m) sperm whale was found on the Utoquai, the promenade of Zurich. The large carcass was surrounded by workers in white protective suits and the dead animal was fenced off, with signs explaining that the International Whale Association was investigating the situation. However, the whale had not made its way up to the Swiss mountains by itself – it was a model made by the Belgian art collective Captain Boomer to protest for the protection of the seas. “Whale strandings have always been some magical event,” the collective explained. “When it happened, whole villages were frightened and amazed.
