FERTILITY FIGURE Bob Jemmett, 75, was taking part in a metal detecting rally at Great Chishill, Cambridgeshire, in September 2018 when, 4in (10cm) down in a ploughed field, he discovered a first century BC bronze Celtic ‘fertility figure’ with oversized genitals, which he nicknamed ‘Nobby’. It measured 37mm x 10mm (1.45in x 0.39in). An image of the figure was published on the Portable Antiquities website and was subsequently used as a logo by the rally organisers in their promotions. As a result, detectorists from all over Europe at rallies would ask Mr Jemmett if they could see Nobby, which he kept in his pocket as a constant companion.
