1857 VICTOR HUGO ha influenzato generazioni di scrittori. Ma pochi sanno che fra gli estimatori del grande romanziere francese c’era un russo che aveva visitato Parigi nel 1857... 1861 ... ritrovandosi ad assistere a un’esecuzione pubblica, dalla quale era rimasto disgutato. Questi era LEV TOLSTOJ, il padre della letteratura russa, che visitò di nuovo la Francia tra il 1860 e il 1861. Ed ebbe modo di conoscere Hugo. 1909 Tolstoj era in contatto con un altro personaggio di portata storica: ben note sono le sue lettere a GANDHI, che fu ispirato nella pratica della non-violenza proprio dal pensiero dello scrittore russo.
