DON A. GREEN (1931-2024), FOUNDER OF SAGE

Don Green started the company Grizzly Fiberglass in Auburn, Washington, in 1954 with $6,000 from his wife’s family inheritance. For some time, Fenwick purchased fiberglass blanks from Grizzly, and the two companies merged in 1968. At Fenwick, Don Green worked with tournament caster Jim Green to develop the world’s first production graphite fishing rods. Fenwick also introduced the first integral tip-over-butt ferrule, which is the most common form of ferrule in graphite rods today. Don Green left Fenwick in 1978 and in 1980 founded the Winslow Rod Company with just six employees and 1,500 square feet of manufacturing space. Shortly thereafter renamed Sage, the company is still located in the same spot on Bainbridge Island, Washington, but now has 175 employees and a 30,000-square-foot facility.
