Seit drei Jahren lebe ich nun schon in Tunesien. Doch obwohl es für die Menschen hier fester Bestandteil des Alltags ist, bin ich bisher noch nie in einem tunesischen Hamam gewesen. Die meiste Zeit des Jahres ist es so warm, dass ich mir einfach nicht vorstellen konnte, mich in ein heißes Badehaus zu begeben. Ich schwimme lieber regelmäßig im Meer, um mich abzukühlen. Doch ein Buch, das mich sehr gefesselt hat und in Tunesien spielt, gab für mich den Anstoß, mich endlich genauer mit der Bäderkultur zu beschäftigen. In der Schlussszene des Romans sitzt die Hauptperson in einem Hamam in Sfax, einer tunesischen Hafenstadt am Mittelmeer.
