Er habe ihre Nummer von einer gemeinsamen Freundin bekommen, sagt der junge Pastor, der Coretta Scott in ihrem Studierendenzimmer anruft. Er heißt Martin Luther King Jr. und ist intensiv auf der Suche nach einer Frau. Sein Vater sitzt ihm im Nacken, meint, dass es für seinen Sohn an der Zeit sei zu heiraten. Glücklicherweise hatte der junge Theologe über Coretta schon viel Gutes gehört und ist nun wild entschlossen, die in seinen Augen außergewöhnliche Frau persönlich zu treffen. „Es geht mir wie Napoleon“, sagt er am Telefon zu Coretta, ohne lang um den heißen Brei zu reden. „Ich stehe vor meinem persönlichen Waterloo und bin auf den Knien.“ Corettas erster Gedanke: „Absurd!
