Most of my time was in the Merlin-powered P-40F. The P-40 was a rock-solid airplane; in fact, it climbed just like a big rock—slow and sluggish! But down low it was a great gun platform and a killer strafer. Although it lacked the get-up-and-go to tangle with the Luftwaffe and Italians at high altitudes, I nevertheless met them head-on when they dove into us.
