Maj. Paul I “Pappy” Gunn

An inventive fellow by the name of Paul “Pappy” Gunn narrowly escaped during the Japanese takeover of the Philippines. Pappy was a former maintenance chief of a small Philippines airline and didn’t care much for the new occupants who had forcibly taken over. Pappy was appointed to the rank of major and stationed with the 5th Air Force Command in Australia. As payback to the Japanese, Pappy came up with an ingenious plan for the B-25 bomber. Gunn eliminated the bombardier station in the Plexiglas front nose and engineered four forward-firing fixed-position .50-caliber machine guns to fire through it. He also installed two .50-caliber machine-gun blister packs on the B-25’s side, just below the pilot and copilot.
