While the crew was fortunate not have gone through the worst of the chaos at Hamid Karzai, they did experience high stress and were, like many other C-17 crews, moved by what they saw. We asked them what they’ll remember most.

Captain Ian Watkins: “I have two memories. When the base was being attacked and all of the helicopters were in there. I got to watch them launch in every direction. I felt like it was out of a movie.” “On the second mission, it was the care and handling of the refugees at the airport and me sitting in the cockpit seeing a little girl who looked very similar to my daughter.
