457th Heritage Flight

Of the nine fighter squadrons of P-51s that were stationed on Iwo Jima with 7th Fighter Command, several are still active today. One of them is the 457th Fighter Squadron of the 301st Fighter Wing based at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Texas. The 457th FS was activated in October 1944 as part of the 506th Fighter Group, specifically for the Very Long Range (VLR) missions against Japan during WW II. After a period of inactivation and activations, the squadron began its current period in 1972. In 1990, the squadron received the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which it continues to fly today, and has participated in many fighter operations overseas in the past 30 years.
