Don’t backflip on gill netting

Queensland’s phasing out of gill nets has hit a snag, as John explains.

Back around twenty years ago then Fishing World editor Jim Harnwell and I did a camping and fishing trip down the coast west of Darwin, sleeping in one-man tents on beaches and crossing our fingers the crocs would stay away. We caught a whole range of species… Spaniards, longtails, cobia, jacks, black jew… plus some barra, but not a whole lot. One morning we tried to poke into a likely looking creek but at the entrance found an unattended gill net with some big very dead barra caught in its mesh. What was really upsetting was that it had clearly been set and not checked for some time. The water temp was around 26 degrees. The barra were half-cooked and quite useless.
