THE FRDC has reported on campaigns being developed in South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia aimed at shifting their current primary target species to alternatives which are not under the same pressures. In SA, that could be swapping leatherjackets, blue mackerel and sea sweep for King George whiting and snapper. In Queensland, mahi mahi, amberjack and cobia for pearl perch and snapper. In WA, mahi mahi and marlin for baldchin groper and snapper. THE Australian Government has released its National Fisheries Plan 2022 – 2030. DPI Fisheries has officially unveiled its Angler Access website, which provides recreational fishers with thousands of locations across inland NSW where rivers, streams and lakes can be legally accessed for fishing. DPI has worked collaboratively with recreational fishing stakeholders, such as the NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers, to finetune the site and ensure it is user friendly and provides useful information to benefit the general recreational fishing community. The website provides anglers with an easy-to-use map showing more than 4000 verified sites across NSW to explore in search of popular native species including Murray cod, golden perch and Australian bass, as well as other freshwater sportfish such as brown trout and rainbow trout. THE new federal ministry has been sworn in, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed Labor senators and MPs at the first federal caucus since the party won the federal election. Tanya Plibersek will head up the Environment and Water portfolio, covering marine parks. Meanwhile, Murray Watt, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Emergency Management will cover fisheries issues, like “super trawlers” and offshore quotas. I recently spent three weeks in the Northern Territory fishing on the Daly River. The purpose of this trip was to fish in two major tournaments, the Barra Classic and the Barra Nationals. Both of these events were held on the magnificent Daly River, and these competitions attract some of the best anglers from around the country to compete against each other. THE weather this year in south east Queensland has been wet and windy almost continually until the end of May. For months the entire estuary was brown and dirty and apart from mud crabs there weren’t many fishing options. Even on the offshore grounds the dirty water penetrated wide of the continental shelf, and for about 10 weekends in a row there were strong wind warnings and rough seas. May is normally characterised by fine weather and as far as fishing goes; it is a transition month where the summer pelagic fish become less common and the winter species, such as snapper, mulloway and pearl perch, increase in number. OVER many years of fishing, I must say that the humble flathead is an all-time favourite species. Flathead have a striking and intriguing appearance are one of the most reliable species for anglers of all levels to pursue. Whilst not known for their fighting prowess, a large flathead is quite a formidable adversary on light tackle. The fight of a big flathead is unpredictable and erratic that can catch anglers unaware, often resulting in broken leaders and stories of the one that got away. Flathead reside on the bottom and prefer sandy or muddy habitats interspersed with weed or rock. CENTRAL Australia is not a destination that anglers would normally visit for fishing. Aboriginal people who have fished this area for thousands of years and for me it held a real fascination. Scientists and ecologists study the species for knowledge but aboriginals still fish this area for food and do quite well. My brother mentioned to me he had served a couple in the store where he works in the heart of Darwin. The coastline flanking Cape Cuvier in WA has been described as the “Mecca” of Land Based Game in Australia. It’s on many LBG anglers’ bucket list and plenty have made the pilgrimage. We had visited this part of the WA coast several times already and recently made another visit. Despite it being a slow period, we enjoyed some memorable fishing. This article discusses the ups and downs of visiting one of the best LBG locations in Australia. The Quobba Coast stretches from where the road hits the ocean at the Blowholes north to Red Bluff. MANY years ago, I was a hunter and a sport fisherman. The fishing bit was easy compared to the hunting. Finding access to properties that we could hunt on was always difficult. We had a good sheep property out near Cowra that was full of rabbits and foxes and the owner was happy for us to reduce their numbers and even stay in the shearer’s accommodation when we visited. We also had a few other properties closer to our Nowra home base. A lovely property just up behind Werri Beach that was crawling with rabbits and another one south west of Nowra that had foxes, crows and rabbits. In a world where everything seems to be getting more complicated every year, I’m becoming a firm believer in the Simple Life. The Oxford dictionary describes simple as “plain, basic, or uncomplicated in form; without much decoration or ornamentation.” Maybe it’s a sign of getting older but I’d like to think of it as just getting smarter, spending my time wisely and focussing on the uncomplicated and enjoyable things in life. I USED to skip school to go luderick fishing. I’ve always loved the sight of the float sliding down into the green waters as my weed bait was sucked into a luderick’s mouth. I started fishing for them in the Brisbane Water, beside the rusting mesh of an ancient swimming pool located at the front of our house. When I was old enough to row the tinnie around, I’d venture to rocky points and oyster leases, probably thinking the fishing would always be better elsewhere.
