Just for giggles (and because my friend and boss Vince DeNiro suggested I do so), I dragged out an M1A1 Thompson for a side-by-side comparison. Each of these two weapons was the apex predator among .45ACP submachine guns in their respective eras. We thought it might be an interesting exercise to see if 55 years of mechanical evolution made much practical difference. For starters, the Thompson weighs almost twice as much as the UMP45. To go from the truck to the firing line that’s not a big deal. To have to hump this gun all the way across Europe, however, would be another thing entirely. The Thompson is just insanely heavy.
