While car engineering is often the preserve of the greatest intellectuals, there are some fundamental and universal truths that won’t test the limits of one’s IQ. Shrinking dimensions, reducing weight and lowering the centre of gravity are the simple ingredients behind every great sportscar. So by merely distilling the essence of a BMW M4 in a smaller, nimbler M2, it was somewhat inevitable that a punchy and raunchy machine would be the final package. Until the arrival of the BMW M2, its bigger siblings were regarded as the quintessential driving machines, and sales accurately reflected this.
