In mid-February, hundreds of farmers gathered in the small town of Bhit Shah in Pakistan’s Sindh province to launch a long-term protest against the government’s push to encourage corporate farming in the country, according to a report by Peoplesdispatch.org.
The government recently announced its plans to build six new canals on the Indus River, which farmers argued would harm the environment and cost thousands of small-scale farmers their livelihoods. The farmers voiced their opposition to the government’s Pakistan Green Initiative (PGI), which was introduced just a day before.
The PGI, a joint effort between the government and the Pakistan army, is an agricultural project aimed at advancing the country’s agricultural development.
