Fly outbreak a concern for livestock producers in Gauteng

Jaco Taute, chairperson of the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation in Gauteng, said that urgent action needed to be taken for farmers to protect the red meat industry in the province. Flies, known vectors of diseases such as anaplasmosis and bovine leukosis, could impact livestock productivity, Taute said, leading to reduced weight gain and lower milk production. He added that poor sanitation and waste management in the province was largely responsible for the outbreak of flies, which resulted in stagnant water, overflowing drains and unhygienic conditions. These environments are ideal breeding grounds for flies. “Local governments must prioritise waste management and [sewerage] system maintenance.
