RING MACHINE Of the processes involved in assembling a high-performance engine, little is more tedious than file-fitting rings. The objective is to size the ring endgap to a desired specification, normally using rings that are slightly oversized for the bore. Manufacturers generally sell “file-fit” rings at 0.005 inch over the finished bore size, allowing the gaps to be sized as desired. As the name implies, “file-fitting” was traditionally done with nothing more than a fine hand file—a very time-consuming and skilled process. Various contraptions have been developed to make this a more precise and less tedious process.
