Machine work is the core of any engine build, and when that build involves taking a worn-out, used engine to race specifications, the machine work can make or break the effort. Typically, the builder figures out what needs to be done and then instructs the machinist on what operations are to be done and often what specs are desired. The menu of machining operations is really broad, but general budget constraints and practicality mean keeping the work down to the basics. Common block operations include the bore and hone work on the cylinders, machining the block decks, line honing the mains, resizing the rods (if the connecting rods are being re-used), pin fitting, and balancing.
