THE MINDSET In Lorcan Finnegan’s Australian-set psychological thriller, Cage’s unnamed character undergoes quite the journey. As he attempts to close a deal on a beachfront property, he is terrorised by a gang of psychotic surfers, and things go south. “The main source for me,” says Cage, “was John Cheever’s marvellous short story ‘The Swimmer’, which has the poignance of a David Hockney painting. There’s something heartbreaking and simple about it.” In the film, Cage’s character begins to unravel. Big time. “It spoke to me,” says Cage of the material. “Because I’ve always believed that anyone can appear very normal and be very normal, but if you scratch the surface of that person long enough, the inner caveman’s coming out.
