DRESS CIRCLE In the 1950s and ’60s, even as Christian Dior’s hourglass-figure New Look seemed to define femininity, Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga took a different tack, conjuring up structured, imaginatively daring architectural dresses and gowns that often surrounded their wearers in billows of fabric. Jackie Kennedy and actress Ava Gardner were fans, as were fellow designers Coco Chanel and Hubert de Givenchy; Balenciaga, who died in 1972, would go on to influence generations of followers, from onetime apprentice Emanuel Ungaro to Phoebe Philo of Céline. “Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion,” a new exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, pays tribute to the groundbreaking designer’s life and legacy with more than 120 original garments and hats by the master, as well as archival sketches, fabric samples, and X-ray photographs that reveal the hidden…
