The Auckland Project was founded in 2012 as a regeneration project to celebrate the history and cultural heritage of Bishop Auckland in County Durham. We spoke to Clare Baron, Head of Curatorial at the project, to hear about the different sites open to visitors, and why it is so important to preserve this history for the future.

We were founded with a vision to create a series of visitor attractions that will provide a catalyst for regeneration. Ultimately, the aim was to make Bishop Auckland a better place to live, work and visit. We have a number of attractions around the town, which all centre around Auckland Palace. I’m Head of Curatorial at the Auckland Project, which means I work together with my team across all of our museum and gallery sites. Auckland Palace has been the residence of the Prince Bishops of Durham for almost 1000 years, and the Bishop of Durham continues to work from this building, so it is still a living and working palace. Alongside the palace, we have Auckland Gardens and the Deer Park, and the Faith Museum, which opened in autumn…
