The Woodsman, Hotel Indigo
This restaurant, which specialises in sustainable British fare with a nose-to-tail ethos (meaning that nothing is wasted) is conveniently located just across the road from Shakespeare’s New Place, in a historic hotel that Shakespeare himself knew.
In Shakespeare’s time, the hotel was known as the Falcon, and today, following a two-year transformation at a cost of £14m, it’s a pleasingly modern hotel, albeit with plenty of period character retained.
As part of the works, the original black-and-white timber frame was partly restored and replaced, and the Tudor roof remains, while inside the Falcon Coffee Lounge, it’s very easy to imagine Shakespeare sat in his favourite chair, tankard in hand (he was something of a regular here).
