CAN-AM DEBUTS NEW MAVERICK TRAIL

Can-Am has debuted a new model 2018 with the 50-inch-wide Maverick Trail. Available in 800cc and 1,000cc models, the Maverick Trail is made to fit on trails that fullsized UTVs are allowed to go. We recently got a chance to drive the new Can-Am Maverick Trail on the trails surrounding the scenic Bear River Lodge in the mountains of Uinta-Wasach-Cache National Forrest, east of Salt Lake City, Utah. At only 50 inches wide but much longer than others in its class, the M-T has great legroom and plenty of storage space, but elbowroom is, of course, limited. Wolfpack Motorsports has the hookup when it comes to being on the inside. Take this ’17 Can Am Maverick X3. They built it for a Monster Energy model. When not traveling the U.S. as an action-sports model on the Supercross circuit, she becomes off-road enthusiast Lindsey Bowyer who likes to take her action-sports model friends out to blast around in this golden Can-Am Maverick X3. The Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Season is officially over. This season has been hard fought, but in the end there can only be one champion. All of the drivers did their best to be left standing on top of that podium, and the result was some great racing. The race everyone came out to see was the Pro 4 race between Kyle Leduc and Rob MacCachren. With a less than 10-point difference between the two, their racing sure didn’t disappoint. After picking up an extra point to increase his lead over MacCachren, Leduc chose to start the championship race at the back of the pack. After a mandatory yellow, which left MacCachren and Carl Renezeder on the side of the track, Leduc quickly picked his way through the remaining racers…

A TALLER RAM FOR BIGGER TIRES

The subject was a ’13 Ram 1500 4WD. The owner was looking for a rise in height of the truck and the ability to run 35-inch tires. Skyjacker was the answer. The company offers both 4- and 6-inch lift kits for these trucks, but the 4-inch kit fit the bill just fine and was a complete lift solution. The independent front suspension was raised using taller knuckles, and the proper geometry was maintained by moving the lower A-arms and front axle assembly downward using new crossmembers. The factory front struts were retained with the addition of spacers, so the original spring rate and ride were maintained. The Ram has a standard straight-axle in the rear, located with a linked suspension and coil springs. The Skyjacker kit included new dual-rate coil…

A TALLER RAM FOR BIGGER TIRES

Russell Glen says that when he was in his 20s, he had a Mad Max Toyota Prerunner that he drove into the ground. As capable as it was, he has always wanted to build a luxury prerunner that’s “super nice and plush inside but can do 70 mph down a sandwash.” He says that he was initially set on a new Toyota Tundra, but after further research and driving some trucks, he decided on a Chevy Silverado LTZ 4x4. He liked that it was a Cadillac on the inside, and it didn’t hurt that with his contacts at Ron Baker Chevrolet, he ordered the truck directly from Chevy, including an option for a Corvette engine. When Ryan Abellana set about building this sweet ’74 Ford F-100, he had a plan and a little prodding too. “This vehicle was built with strict supervision of my wife and daughter who know off-road racing,” says Abellana. “They had expectations of what this should be capable of. My wife has copiloted races in the past (they raced a 1400 truck from 2004-2008) with me in the MDR, and MORE series. And my daughter wouldn’t miss a course prerun. We’re suckers for a good trail ride, and the Tahoe National Forrest has some of the best to be had. That’s why for the past 50 years, the California Four Wheel Drive Association has been holding their annual Sierra Trek run in the hills near Truckee, California. Normally a Jeep-heavy run with the occasional Toyota variant thrown in, the Sierra Trek is not for the faint of heart. Some of the runs take a hard-core rockcrawler to navigate. But the organizers at California Four Wheel Drive Association claimed that there was a good run happening that trucks could navigate easily. This year has seen a lot of big events celebrating the 50th anniversary — the Baja 1000 and the NORRA Rally come to mind. But for 50 long years, the Sierra Trek has taken place in the mountains near Truckee, California. Hosted by the California Four Wheel Drive Association, it’s a great weekend of serious off-road driving, friends, and food. As the Fordyce run is rated a Cat 9, it’s been mainly Jeeps for years, but recently there’s been an outreach to other vehicles. The weekend started with an overnight SUV trip/historic tour of the back roads and trails, while on Saturday was the Outer Limits run that modified trucks could handle as well as a UTV/ATV run around the Meadow Lake area. You see, we’re among the first people from the outside to ever get an up-close look at the General Motors Desert Proving Ground Yuma, a 2,500-acre expanse leased from the U.S. military. The inaugural Southern California Toyota Fest took place in Calico Ghost Town in the hills near Yermo, California, on September 22-24. On Friday morning, Toyotas invaded the ghost town campground, where they were greeted by a large tent and social space graciously provided by Demello Offroad and Icon Vehicle Dynamics. As people began to finish setting up their campsite, a few runs to explore the surrounding desert were organized, starting with a trip over to lower Odessa Doran to drive through the spectacular natural arches, and the slot canyon that marks the entrance to Odessa Canyon. There’s just something enjoyable about riding down an old dirt road in a well-used 4x4 with nowhere to go. The feeling is difficult to explain and harder to understand — you just have to experience it. Maybe it’s because the suspension is broken in, smoothed out, and well worn. Maybe it’s because rattles and squeaks are nothing new, and nothing to worry about. Maybe it’s the feeling that you can go just about anywhere you want despite the obstacles. It’s not everyday that you get to go riding with a legend on a winding desert course that said legend laid out. But it happened to a lucky group of UTV’ers. Twice. Last month, we covered some tips on layout and populating a dash with gauges, switches, and other controls, whether it be adding to an existing vehicle panel or building a dash from scratch. Following that type of work is the wiring of the instrumentation and electrical components. Given that your vehicle is subjected to the extremes of temperature, vibration, dust, and humidity, it makes sense that electrical wiring deserves careful attention if you want to ensure its reliable function under those conditions for a long period of time. When choosing components and before you start wiring, there are a few decisions to make, such as whether to use solder joints or mechanical terminal connections. When wiring a dash or other panel you might consider a master connector or multiple connectors…

PARKER 400 THROUGH THE YEARS

The Parker 400 is a race almost as old as off-road racing itself, having its roots back to the ‘71 Dam 500. Created by the Parker City Chamber of Commerce and NORRA (North American Off-Road Racing Association), the granddaddy promoter of the Baja 1000 and Baja 500, it had a full 100 entries for the first race. Those promoters might be surprised that their little race would still be viable today, and is still a huge success despite the many challenges it has had over the years. Since that first race with NORRA, the event has gone through all the major race promoters in its 46-year history.
