Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke, New Zealand’s youngest MP, became a worldwide sensation in November when she was filmed ripping up a racist bill and starting a haka during a parliamentary debate. The haka was in response to the controversial Treaty Principles Bill, and the video quickly went viral, attracting more than 700m views in one week. The Treaty Principles Bill is arguably the most divisive piece of legislation to be proposed in Aotearoa (New Zealand). The bill looks to redefine the principles as set out in Te Tiriti o Waitangi – New Zealand’s foundational document – and erase the special rights and protections Māori have as indigenous people of Aotearoa.
