Professor Pamela Gillies is leading the probe despite millions being “squandered” on a failed New York campus as principal of Glasgow Caledonian (GCU).
Green MSP Maggie Chapman, who was recently elected as Rector of Dundee University, said: “The independent review is an important part of the process but, frankly, I am concerned that someone who oversaw such a disastrous plan for GCU would be deemed appropriate for the task.”
Dundee University has proposed 632 job losses to plug a deficit of £35million about 20 per cent of staff. Principal Professor Shane O'Neill warned MSPs last week it could have run out of cash by June without support.
Gillies was principal of GCU from 2006 to 2022. Now her decisions at GCU are under scrutiny. The NY satellite campus opened in 2014 and received £26.5million in loans and grants from GCU. But the project struggled to recruit students and was hampered by delays in being able to award degrees.
The GCU said in 2023 the campus had “not reached its potential” and a Spanish business school took over.
