Gaza's health ministry announced the death toll as it was claimed Bardaweel was killed along with his wife when a missile struck their tent in Khan Younis.
Hospitals said they received 26 bodies after the strikes overnight, including several women and kids.
Tanks also advanced into nearby Rafah, sparking an evacuation. Israel ordered people to leave the Tel al-Sultan district and go to Mawasi, an area of tent camps. Reporter Mustafa Gaber fled with his family.
He said: "It's displacement under fire."
A building was also destroyed in a strike on the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in central Gaza.
It came after Israel ended the ceasefire last week with a blitz that has killed 700.
