Babcock boss Graeme Thomson will take over at the Scottish Government-owned shipyard on May 1, following the departure of interim head John Petticrew for “personal reasons”.
Thomson was most recently the programme director of the Rosyth-based project to build Type 31 frigates for the Royal Navy.
Ferguson said his priority will be the building of the Glen Rosa - the second of two over-budget and late ferries intended to serve the Isle of Arran.
His appointment comes at a time of strife for the yard, which this week missed out on a contract to build seven small ferries for the west coast network.
