The shameless former Health Secretary was grilled at the Covid-19 inquiry about how government contracts for medical equipment were dished out.
But relatives of people who died during the pandemic slammed him over the fast-tracked deals for friends of Tories.
Yesterday Hancock, who has not apologised, said messages by him recommending one supplier, who was the landlord of his local pub, were evidence of “my impeccable behaviour”.
He told of his pride, adding: “What happened was so many people working as hard as they could to save lives, and they bought more PPE as a result.
“People are alive who would otherwise be dead.”
It was reported in November 2020 that Alex Bourne had been awarded work supplying tens of millions of vials for NHS Covid tests despite having had no previous experience.
Bourne, who used to run the Cock Inn in Thurlow, Suffolk, said he initially offered his services to Hancock in a WhatsApp message.
It was put to the ex-MP that preferential treatment to contacts of ministers was unjustified but he insisted a similar VIP lane should be in place for the next pandemic.
