Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) announced it had snubbed publicly-owned Ferguson Marine and handed preferred bidder status for the vessels to a Polish yard.
Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk scored the highest in the tender process, which used a weighting of 65-35 per cent in terms of technical and financial criteria to assess the bids.
Contracts are hoped to be finalised following a 10-day “standstill period”.
Ferguson's was nationalised by the Scottish Government in 2019 after it struggled to deliver two new car ferries, one of which has still not been completed. Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said: “So much for Stronger for Scotland.... More like SNP - Stronger for Poland.
“This is a huge blow to Scottish shipbuilding. Once again, jobs and investment going abroad on the SNP’s watch.”
Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "These seven new vessels will help improve connectivity and resilience for island residents, businesses and communities, and their electric operation will contribute to reduced carbon emissions from Scotland's ferry fleet and make ferry travel more sustainable.”
