His Dark Blues beat Dundee United 1-0 at Dens in January to end a 69-year wait for a Scottish Cup win over their rivals. This time they claimed a first victory at Tannadice in 21 years.
A Jordan McGhee double, Scott Tiffoney’s goal and a late Simon Murray penalty grabbed the glory and handed Dundee a first win in nine league games.
Boss Docherty said: "Some of our play, we could have been out of sight. We could have been 5-1 up and to do that against your nearest rivals, who are having a good season and who are a good side at home, speaks volumes for the quality of player that I've got in there.

"The thing that pleases me most is the mentality. There was a real challenge put in front of the players to get back into the pack, go five clear of St Johnstone and pull others into it. But more than that, to answer to that record of 20 years not winning at Tannadice.
"That shouldn't sit well with any Dundee fan. And they answered that today. They deserve a hell of a lot of credit for that."
Docherty wants this win to launch his team's season and lift them away from the relegation zone.

He added: "It can totally kick us on. The boys are flying in the dressing room now.
"I've always said if I get the players back that I know can make a difference, we're a match for anyone.
"Hopefully now we can use that as a springboard and we can hopefully have a platform to kick on and start picking up.
"We've eight games left. So my challenge is to pick up as many points as we can in those remaining 24."

You'd have thought the away side were the team pushing for Europe and their hosts who were at the wrong end of the table.
Dundee had the ball in the net in 11 minutes when Lyall Cameron volleyed in but VAR intervened because Oluwaseun Adewumi had strayed offside.

It was a let-off and Jim Goodwin, left, was left with another issue as he lost Luca Stephenson who was replaced by Craig Sibbald.
He had hardly got his boots dirty when Dundee got the goal they deserved.
Scott Tiffoney forced the ball on to Ziyad Larkeche, who crossed from the left and Jordan McGhee came in and stooped to head past United keeper Jack Walton.
Walton made a one-hand save to deny Cameron then Adewumi gave Simon Murray a gilt-edged chance on the turn but he flashed across goal.

But his disappointment was softened when Dundee made it 2-0 seconds later.
Larkeche forced the ball forward to Tiffoney who charged forward and fired in a speculative shot that was right at Walton but he let it squirm into the net.
It was a howler but the jubilant Dundee support were delighted.
